Payhip shop, and my pricing
There is now an LK Nesse Payhip shop! This gives readers another option for buying my work, and as with my itchio and my Ko-fi , you get pdf and epub. Also, all three of those options for where to buy allow you to choose whether to pay the minimum price or add a little more.
Yeah, there's one more way to buy my work that you don't see me listing in What These Options Have in Common. You can get my work on Kindle , but without those choices the other options allow for. Actually, you can only get most of my work on Kindle. You have to go to one of the other places if you want my Art Grimoire solo rpg + art journal .
That kind of leads to what I really wanted to talk about, which is a little explanation of my pricing.
A few people have told me my prices are way too low. To be honest, I agree with them. I do think I should be paid more for my work. I probably also believe you should be paid more for your work. The exceptions to that are very rare, and I doubt anyone who falls into that category is reading this.
I don't want to raise my prices, though. Not at this time. I know what it is to have limitations that make spending even five dollars on a book in one month not always possible, and a delight when it can be done. A lot of things have shifted and changed over the years, and five dollars isn't now what it was then, but many people are living that way now even if they're doing it with different numbers. I made the decision to set low prices in order to make my work accessible to more people.
Divination services have the highest prices with a range of ten to twenty dollars, depending on which type of reading you choose. That's because I'm putting my time, energy, and skill into each reading. I send the reading as a detailed pdf report in which I walk you through each step of interpretation. That covers the meanings of positions, individual cards or dice (again, it depends on the reading you choose), and interpretations of how the pieces in the reading interact. The weekly three card readings I share are very quick. If you want an example of how I do paid readings, here's what a report for a three card reading would be like.
And what about prices for my writing? Well, I only have to write those pieces once. I don't even have to pay for printing since they're all digital copies.
Roll for Divination! is set at a minimum price of $5.95 - a little higher than my other currently available works - because that one had the most work put into it. Over 20 years of divination learning and practicing, development and testing of my own system with dice, and writing it as an instructional guide. That's different from writing stories and poetry.
Art Grimoire is also instruction, in a way, but it didn't require the same level of instruction. I had things written down so that I could use the art journal prompts. There was a little fine tuning explanations, checking with other people to make sure I wasn't missing where something would only make sense to myself, and putting some polish on it. The minimum price is $3.95.
Also with a minimum price of $3.95 is Forest Tales. There are only six stories in this collection. Another collection when we return to the Forest might have a different price if it has more stories, but I just couldn't do that with such a small collection. They're short stories, not novelettes or novellas.
And that brings us to Little Things , with a minimum price of $2.50. Let's go ahead and address the obvious - even the price is a "little thing". It's forty-two poems, but they're American cinquains. The longest ones are the Crown and Garland cinquains, which are twenty-five and thirty lines. Most of them are five or ten lines. They are - say it with me - Little Things !
Obviously, you don't really know how much you'll think the writing is worth before you read it. We take that risk every time we buy a book, magazine, etc. If we're familiar with previous work, it doesn't feel like a big risk. We might not think of it as a risk at all. I often share examples of my writing so people can get some idea of what to expect. If you want to take a risk and pay more than the minimum price, I will greatly appreciate it. If you are some kind of artist yourself - writing, music, visual art, sewing, or whatever - you know how much that will matter to me! It's more than just the money.
But I set the minimum prices where they are in order to make it possible for more people to buy my work. If you only pay the minimum price, that will also matter to me in ways that aren't just about the money. Whatever amount you pay, I hope you enjoy my work. I hope it gives you something you need.
